In this major hit segment ID4Africa’s Executive Chairman and host, Dr. Atick, will have a one-on-one conversation with the Honorable Cina Lawson, Minister of Digital Economy and Transformation of Togo, to capture insights and lessons learned from what the country has been doing with regards to ID4D and what it intends to do going forward. Among the topics that will be discussed are the plans being being established for developing a foundational digital identity program based on Open Source that will serve as the enabling platform for service delivery in the nation’s digital economy. Business Models of Identity Authorities [CAN’T MISS!]

In this segment Dr. Atick will engage with the leaders of 4 major identity authorities in charge of today’s most significant identity programs in Africa and the World: Nigeria, Ghana, India and Pakistan. The conversation will compare and contrast the proven practices, as well as the roadmap of these well-established organizations in order to inform nascent identity authorities in the context of ID4D.

Among the objectives is to explore business models, short and long term, that can achieve financial sustainability of these foundational organizations. The discussion will also examine the range of roles of the identity authorities within the national identity ecosystems, especially beyond the initial phase of onboarding. i-ON-ETHIOPIA [MUST WATCH!]

Ethiopia is in the process of launching an ambitious project that will enroll and issue digital identity credentials for their entire population by 2025, and which is expected to become the foundation for all service delivery in due time–both public and private (especially Fintech).

The program is aiming to be “sovereign from the start” by building local capacity, and by basing the national identity platform, primarily on Open Source.

In this exciting segment, Dr. Atick engages with the Executive Director of the project, Yodahe Zemichael, and four other representatives from the identity stakeholders in Ethiopia, to learn about how to implement a strong and inclusive identity ecosystem and the way forward with developing a digital economy and digital infrastructure around the National ID.

Dr. Joseph Atick is a recognized world renowned advocate and expert on identity matters. Having been one of the founders of the identity industry nearly 30 years ago, he led several companies in that domain and developed some of the foundational algorithms underlying secure digital identity today, including the first commercially viable face recognition algorithm.

Dr. Atick retired from the industry in 2010 to focus on promoting identity for social and economic development around the world. In that mission he partnered with the World Bank and other UN agencies, and was heavily involved in the development and field testing of the methodology and analytic tools that would guide the subsequent activities in that space, and would lead to the launch of the ID4D initiative at the World Bank.

In 2014, he co-founded ID4Africa as a pan-African Movement to promote responsible digital transformations through digital identity in Africa. He is a staunch defender of privacy, data protection and human rights and continues to provide counsel to governments and international organization on the use of identity for public good. Dr. Atick holds a Ph.D. in Mathematical Physics from Stanford University.

The Honorable Cina Lawson is Togo’s Minister of Digital Economy and Transformation. She works actively on issues related to digital transformation, youth empowerment and a variety of innovation-driven projects in Togo and across Africa.

Minister Lawson leads Togo through an inclusive and profound transition to the digital economy. Under her leadership, the government has financed broadband deployment throughout several institutions, including all of the country’s public universities.

She is a vocal advocate for new and unconventional solutions leading to the financial inclusion of underserved populations. She is known for increasing and diversifying private sector participation in the telecoms industry.
