On September 15, 12:30 GMT, we will kickstart Season 3 of our much-awaited LiveCasts with an exciting new series called “i-On-Africa”.

Each episode in this series will feature an in-depth report and analysis of progress made by two African countries towards their goal of identity-for-all and will feature a Director General (or equivalent) from each country who will engage with Dr. Joseph Atick to extract best practices and lessons learned. In the series premiere, we dive into two countries: Nigeria and Rwanda.

The Series will cover the following topics:

  1. The current vision of leading African countries regarding foundational identity
  2. The status of the major identity programs currently underway
  3. The policies that have proven effective in boosting enrollment and buy-in
  4. The enabling legal and institutional frameworks that had to be constructed
  5. Financing options
  6. The technical platforms that were deployed
  7. The data protection and privacy measures
  8. The top challenges that had to be overcome
  9. Overview of the roadmap and milestone ahead.
  10. Overall lessons learned and best practice recommendations

Dr. Joseph Atick

Dr. Joseph Atick is a recognized world renowned advocate and expert on identity matters. Having been one of the founders of the identity industry nearly 30 years ago, he led several companies in that domain and developed some of the foundational algorithms underlying secure digital identity today, including the first commercially viable face recognition algorithm.

Dr. Atick retired from the industry in 2010 to focus on promoting identity for social and economic development around the world. In that mission he partnered with the World Bank and other UN agencies, and was heavily involved in the development and field testing of the methodology and analytic tools that would guide the subsequent activities in that space, and would lead to the launch of the ID4D initiative at the World Bank.

In 2014, he co-founded ID4Africa as a pan-African Movement to promote responsible digital transformations through digital identity in Africa. He is a staunch defender of privacy, data protection and human rights and continues to provide counsel to governments and international organization on the use of identity for public good. Dr. Atick holds a Ph.D. in Mathematical Physics from Stanford University.

Aliyu AZIZ is the Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in Nigeria. Before this appointment, he was one of the pioneers of the Commission and held the position of Director for the Information Technology (IT) /National Identity Database Department.

Previously, he was Director at the Secretariat of the Presidential Implementation Committee; responsible for implementing government decisions for consumer credit systems, national outsourcing initiatives and the harmonization of identification schemes in Nigeria.

Josephine MUKESHA is Director General at the National Identification Agency (NIDA) in Rwanda since February 2017.

Ms. MUKESHA has a strong database management background based on intensive academic training and more than 10 years’ work experience in database management, mobile software applications, networking, project management and people management.

Prior to her current role, she served as Director of IT for the Database and Applications division at NIDA for over 8 years.
