Mr. Abdiweli Ali Timacade is Somalia’s second officially nominated DG of the National Identification & Registration Authority (NIRA). As DG of NIRA, he shapes and approves the organization’s strategies and overall direction, reviews results, and works with stakeholders and partners to further NIRA’s goal of ensuring identification for all in Somalia. Mr Abdiweli completed his Master’s Degree in Developmental Studies (specializing in Human Development) at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya right after completing his Bachelor’s Degree of Law and Shari’ah (LL.B) from Puntland State University. He went on to spend several years working on civil society programs, and co-founding the Youth Peer Education Network (Y-PEER), which is a non-profit making and non-political youth network established in Sept 2009, based in Garowe. This experience allowed Mr Abdiweli to make a positive change in the lives of young people & inspired him to enter politics as Deputy Chief of Staff at Puntland State House to ensure government programs reflected the needs of citizens & addressed their challenges. Mr Abdiweli’s broad experience & interests also include business & entrepreneurship owning several business initiatives. Mr Abdiweli’s firsthand experience of the socio-economic barriers facing Somalia, particularly marginalised groups, shapes his commitment to accelerate the pace of social change in Somalia & transform lives through his pivotal role at NIRA.
